Detection and Tracking of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) by Means of the Watershed Segmentation and Hough Transform

چکیده
Detection and tracking of CMEs is an important issue in solar physics. The appropriate images are continuously collected and parameters describing the extent, position, and time of occurrence of the CMEs are put in a catalogue. Because of the huge amount of data, it is imperative to process these images automatically. One of the best techniques for object extraction is the watershed segmentation. It works well for individual images. It is shown in this paper how this technique can be extended to a sequence of images showing the temporal development of the CMEs. The detection and tracking of the CME is done automatically via the Hough transform which points to at least some pixels located on the front of the moving CME. An approach has been developed which allows one to obtain the initial masks of the CMEs and subsequently merge the regions obtained from the watershed segmentation into the full masks of the CMEs so that in response to the sequence of CME input images a sequence of masks is generated.

Solar Mini-Dimming Kinematics and Their Positive Correlations with Coronal Mass Ejections and Prominence
Solar mini-dimmings can be detect in the Extreme Ultra-Violet coronal eruptions. Here, sequences of 171_A images taken by Solar Dynamic Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembaly on 13 June 2010 are used. In this special day, both of coronal mass ejection and prominence were observed. The average velocities and accelerations of 500 mini-dimmings which were detected using on feature based classif...
متن کاملOn the autonomous detection of coronal mass ejections in heliospheric imager data
[1] We report on the development of an Automatic Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) Detection tool (AICMED) for the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI). CMEs observed with heliospheric imagers are much more difficult to detect than those observed by coronagraphs as they have a lower contrast compared with the background light, have a larger range of intensity variation and are easily confused with other...
متن کاملInvestigating the kinematics of coronal mass ejections with the automated CORIMP catalog
Studying coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in coronagraph data can be challenging due to their diffuse structure and transient nature, compounded by the variations in their dynamics, morphology and frequency of occurrence. The large amounts of data available from missions like the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) make manual cataloging of CMEs tedious and prone to human error, and so a rob...
متن کاملAutomatic Detection and Tracking of Coronal Mass Ejections in Coronagraph Time Series
We present the current capabilities of a software tool to automatically detect coronal mass ejections (CMEs) based on time series of coronagraph images: the solar eruptive event detection system (SEEDS). The software developed consists of several modules: preprocessing, detection, tracking, and event cataloging. The detection algorithm is based on a 2D to 1D projection method, where CMEs are as...

The large and small Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and mini-CMEs are observed by the Extreme Ultra Violet Imager (EUVI) on the Solar Terrestrial Relation Observatory (STEREO). These eruption events are usually associated with dimming and wave-like brightenings. Here, the images of the full sun on 26 Apr 2008 with STEREO spacecraft (behind) with the cadences of 10 minutes and 150 seconds and pix...
